[Education]

There are six Naturopathic colleges in North America, two of which are located in Canada (see below). Each program enrolls students who have completed at least three years of university study with a minimum of one year equivalent in pre-medical studies. For Canadian students, this consists of 30 semestered credits or 15 full-year credits. For American students, this corresponds to approximately 130 quarter credits or 90 semester hours.

All four schools offer a core program consisting of the healing modalities mentioned above, and the other biomedical sciences (anatomy, biochemistry, pathology, histology, physiology, differential diagnosis, etc.). At the end of the four years of study the candidate must correctly answer at least 75% of the questions asked on each of the 23 exams (5 of these can be written after second year).

After successfully completing the exams, the graduate is a licensed doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, or Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.). In Canada, N.D.s are regulated under the provisions of the Drugless Practitioners Act of Canada 1925.

*

Each province or state has its own examining or licensing board and its own requirements for licensing Naturopathic doctors. Each requires 4,000 hours of training in specified subject areas. Questions about the legal status and/or licenser for practice area should be directed to the appropriate professional association or government agency of the province or state (see below). For more information about training programs in Naturopathic medicine offered in North America, contact the schools directly at the addresses listed below.
